Subject: assignments

I was just told by my Doctor, Friday, that I have to have a Hysterectomy. It is scheduled for Jan. 27th. I will be out of work for 6/8 weeks(which will be a good thing for my homework, I can devote more time to it.) However, I will be in the hospital for 2 nights, 3 days and will be down for 2 weeks, so I am going to try to get all of my homework assignments caught up to that date if possible. Is there anything you suggest I should do?

Dear Deanna,

First thing I want to suggest is that you focus on taking care of yourself.

Second, I would suggest that if you can, you should try to get in all the reading from the first part of the class before the surgery -- that gives you not quite two weeks (from today Tuesday January 18), and <u>if you can</u> write your two essays. If you are not able to do that, I can give you an extension on the due date on the essays (you can turn them in when you turn in the second round of essays in March). With extended deadlines what I have people do is e-mail their essays as attachments through this class e-mail program.

The multiple choice exam is February 4 through 7, which is about 1 week after your surgery. You may not feel like sitting up for an hour that soon after hysterectomy surgery (many women do not). We can schedule a make-up exam especially for you when you feel better, or you can take the test during the make up time for everyone (at the very end of the class).

As mentioned above, sitting straight up is often a problem in the first weeks, and even later you will tire easily. If you have a family member or friend who can help out by logging into the class for you and printing out things (like lectures, reading assignments and even discussion postings) you can do your reading in bed, and then only go to the computer for brief periods to upload or post something.

With the discussions, you can "compile" a group of postings and then print out the results (or even down load them). You would put a check mark next to the ones you haven't read yet and want to read, then scroll to the bottom of the page and find the "compile" button. This will put everything you marked into a separate window in one long listing.

If you right click the mouse inside that window with the compiled discussions, you will see several commands, one of which is "print" and you can print all the compiled discussions to read off- line. You can make a note of the number of anything that you want to respond to, or start your own thread when you do feel up to sitting at the computer.

Take care, and keep me informed about what I can do to help out.

Sue

Thank you so much. When I first wrote you, I was thinking that I would feel better in a couple of days. The more I talked to people who have had it done and what you said, I guess it will be longer than 2 days. Oh well, I tried. I have been reading like you suggested, but If you don't mind, I will take you up on your offer and would like to turn in my Essays when I turn in my second round of essays. And, can I reschedule my exam when I feel better. I really appreciate your kindness in letting me do this. My other professor will not so I am cramming for his class to get everything out of the way. I have printed all of my reading so I can read while I am in bed. Thank you for your suggestions. I am so nervous about this operation that I can't even think straight. :-)

Dear Deanna,

I understand how nervous you are, but remember that although this is a serious

operation, it is one that is done millions of times every year and that most women do quite well with it. The key is relaxing and having people to help you out at home when you get out of the hospital. Try not to push yourself too hard too soon.

It is fine to turn the essays in later, and just let me know when you do get the the point you think you can sit through the exam and we'll schedule it to your convenience.

Subject: I am finally up and moving around

Hello Sue, I am finally up and moving around after my surgery. I was getting so bored and there is absolutely nothing on television during the day. UGH! Can you tell me what I need to do to get caught up. I was on a lot of meds so I didn't get to read the discussions or even my books. I don't know where the last week and 1/2 went. My hysterectomy took longer than the doc expected. I lost a lot of blood and they told my husband that they may have to give me a transfusion, thankfully it didn't come to that. I think my blood count is finally going back up because I feel great today. I know I can't over do it but it is nice to get out of bed and be alert. I want to thank you for your understanding and working with me, now I will work with you and do what I need to do. THanks, Deanna

Dear Deanna,

Don't over do it now! As we discussed earlier, you tell me when you feel ready to take the multiple choice test, and I'll enable it just for you for a period of a few days. Also, when ever you feel like it and get to them, you can e-mail me your two essays from part 1. As for participating in the forum, just do a little more posting in the rest of the class to make up for anything that you didn't do in the first part of the class.

I will be really interesting in hearing from you about your experience, because it looks like I'm going to have to have a hysterectomy in May!

Subject: test 1

I am almost finished with my readings. Do you want to set the test up for middle of next week? Do you want me to post on the readings for the first test or did you want me to just post more next time? Thank you for all of your help.

Dear Deanna,

How's it going? I'm really glad to see that you are feeling up to working so soon after surgery. (Makes me feel less scared about doing it myself this May).

I will set the exam up so that you can take it any time after today (Saturday Feb. 19) and that it will stay open for you until next Sunday. You'll still have only 2 hours to work on it once you start, but you can start any time between now and Feb. 27th.

As for posting, you should just post more on the current (part 2 lessons). all that matters is that you have 20 postings altogether for the whole semester.

Thank you. What I want to tell you about the surgery is don't think about it much. I knew I was going to have to do it but I didn't think too much or go over in my head what all was going to happen or could happen and I am so glad that I didn't. It was a breeze. The worst thing of the whole surgery was the day before the surgery, I had to drink some nasty stuff to clean out my bowels. I went to Bapt. East and they are wonderful. I went in and got my IV and as soon as I did they put something in it to make me relax and then I went right into the surgery room and they said "ok, now we are going to give you something to make you sleep" and as soon as I heard that, I was out. I woke up and was home before I knew it. I hurt just a little but they give you meds for that and when I was home I had pain meds and didn't feel much of anything :-). Right now, other than I have to be careful and not to over do myself, I FEEL GREAT. So please do not worry about it and you will feel great afterwards. It was the best thing I did.
